Huawei P30 Pro Known Issues

The main camera stops focusing, and it only gets worse

So, the main camera hunts and never locks on, and tapping the screen to force focus does nothing. Owners describe it starting as the odd missed shot and getting steadily worse over following months, which is the tell — a software bug doesn’t degrade like that. Reflashing the firmware through eRecovery is worth ruling out first, but the fix that actually sticks is a new main camera module. Huawei’s own service centres charge the full part price for exactly that.

But, some customers turn up convinced the camera is faulty because third-party camera apps won’t use the wide or telephoto lenses properly. That one isn’t a fault and no part changes it. Huawei never exposed the standard Android camera API on this phone, so anything outside the built-in camera app only ever gets partial access to the hardware.

It won’t turn on, and no reset or new battery brings it back

So, before anyone opens anything: a P30 Pro frozen on a black screen but otherwise healthy usually comes back with a long press on the power button, and that costs nothing to try. The category that worries me is the next one — phones that have already been through a factory reset, recovery mode, fastboot, ADB and a replacement battery, and are still dead. All that’s been achieved there is losing the owner’s data.

But, that pattern points at the board-to-board connectors, which no reset can reach. The nastiest documented case on this phone came down to exactly that: pins pulled out of their socket and left stuck in the flat ribbon, others sitting loose in the housing, each one picked out with a needle before anything could be reseated. It’s frequently a previous repair that caused it, so half the job is undoing someone else’s work.

Stuck on old firmware with no safe way to update

So, this is the one that catches repair shops out. There’s no bootloader unlock on the P30 Pro and no supported way to install firmware by hand, and Huawei’s rollout has always been staggered by region, so a phone can sit several builds behind for months with nothing in the settings menu to change it. Owners got desperate enough to pay third-party services for official updates, which tells you plenty about the state of it.

But, the USB flashing workarounds doing the rounds carry a real cost. Once the software on board isn’t certified, the device fails the attestation check that banking apps, contactless payments and some games depend on, and those simply stop working. It’s a straight trade — a newer build for a phone that won’t pay for a coffee. Say that out loud before anyone agrees to it.

Full charge in the morning, flat by the evening, and the phone runs warm

So, plenty of these arrive with the owner certain the cell is worn out, having gone from full at breakfast to dead by evening on ordinary use. Sometimes it genuinely is the battery. But, the pattern worth checking first is heat: if the phone only warms up and drains hard while it’s paired to something over Bluetooth — a car, a watch, headphones — a new battery fixes nothing.

Measure it rather than guess. Check what charge the cell actually holds and how fast it falls with the screen off before quoting for anything. Worth knowing too that this phone’s power management is aggressive enough to kill background apps outright, so owners reporting missed calls on messaging apps are usually describing the same software behaviour, not a network or aerial fault.

It buzzes and beeps with nothing on the screen

So, a fair few owners report the phone vibrating or chirping at random, once or twice an hour, with nothing in the notification shade to explain it. At least one gave up and switched vibration off altogether.

But, the useful part for a repair shop is what this isn’t. The motor fires properly and the speaker plays what it was asked to play, so no part in that chain has failed — something is being announced that never surfaces on screen. Replacing a vibration motor over it is money spent for nothing, and I’d push back on any quote that suggests one.

Typing jumps you to the home screen, or the keyboard vanishes

So, this gets reported as a touch fault and isn’t one. People typing quickly, usually in a messaging app, find the keyboard disappearing mid-sentence or the phone hopping back to the home screen on its own. The owners who compared notes on it were all running gesture navigation rather than the three-button bar, and the swipe-up home gesture lives along the same bottom edge their thumbs were working.

But, before anyone quotes for a screen, switch the phone to button navigation for a day. If it stops, the digitiser was never the problem.
