iPhone 12 Pro Max Known Issues

A temperature warning that won’t clear

The iPhone 12 Pro Max puts up the black “iPhone needs to cool down” screen when a thermal sensor reports a value outside the range iOS will accept, and that reading does not have to be true. A phone sitting cold on the counter and still refusing to get past the warning has a sensor fault, not a heat problem.

The battery carries its own temperature sensor, so a known-good battery is the first test, not a board strip. If the warning survives that, the fault is on the board: liquid residue across a sensor line, or a damaged thermal circuit. The bypass tricks circulating online only mask the reading. They leave a phone running with no thermal protection at all, which is a worse phone than the one that came in.

A black screen on a phone that’s plainly still running

Warmth is the giveaway. A 12 Pro Max that heats up on the charger and buzzes on a force restart is executing code, so the fault sits between the board and the panel, not in the power system. These get sold on cheap by owners who have written them off as dead, and a fair share of them aren’t.

The torch test that works on older iPhones doesn’t apply here. Shining a light at an LCD screen finds the image hiding behind a failed backlight; the 12 Pro Max uses a 6.7-inch OLED at 1284 x 2778, and an OLED lights its own pixels. No image means no image. That leaves the display assembly or the board’s display rail, and the only honest way to separate the two is a known-good screen on the bench before anyone quotes for board work.

Something stops working days after a screen repair

The screws in this phone are not interchangeable. They differ by fractions of a millimetre, and one that’s too long for the hole it goes into punches through the outer layer of the logic board and cuts whatever traces run underneath. Which function dies depends entirely on which hole took the wrong screw, so the phone often leaves the bench working and fails later.

Fixing it means finding the hole under a microscope, working out what was severed, and running jumper wire round the break. That costs more than the repair that caused it. The only real defence is process: every screw goes back in the hole it came out of, on a mat that keeps track of position.

The replacement screen doesn’t look like the original

The factory panel on this phone measures 0.9 JNCD absolute colour accuracy. Nothing in the replacement market is sold against that number, so a customer coming back to say the white looks warmer or the colours look flat is usually describing a real difference, not imagining one. Replacement panels come in grades, and the grade should be named before the screen goes in, not after.

Ordering starts with the software identifier rather than the number printed on the back. The 12 Pro Max ships as A2342, A2410, A2411 and A2412 across different regions, and all of them report as iPhone13,4, which is the identifier worth quoting to a supplier.
