iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus Battery Replacement Guide

We will happily do your iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6S / 6S Plus Battery Replacement any where in Bristol, Bath or Portishead, we are mobile, so We Come To You, but if you fancy doing it yourself, carry on reading. The steps you need to follow to replace your battery on all of these iPhone models are literally identical except for the fact that Apple started using glue to hold their screens in place when they launched the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models.

Before you start you will need these tools:

    • The correct iPhone Battery
    • Pentalobe screwdriver
    • Suction cup
    • Metal pry tool
    • 2 Expired plastic banking / membership cards (you may damage them)
    • Hair dryer
    • Star / Phillips screwdriver
    • Plastic spluger

Are iPhone 6 / 6s / Plus Batteries Interchangeable?

No, they are not interchangeable.  I get asked this often “will iphone 6s battery work in iPhone 6?” or “does an iphone 6 plus battery fit an iPhone 6s plus” nope, they have different connections and different power capacities, so buying the correct battery for your device is important. Have a look at the back of your iPhone, look for a reference number starting with an A and 4 numbers such as A1475, then just search google with that number and the word “iPhone” and you will quickly know which iPhone you have. You can not believe how often I get called out to jobs in Bristol, Bath or Portishead only to find out the client does not know what iPhone model they have. Most batteries can be bought on Ebay. The main thing to look for is what date the battery was manufactured, you do not want to buy an Old battery. Check if the person you are buying from sells these on a regular basis, ask if the battery has a manufacture date on it.

Opening the iPhone Screen and Disconnecting the Battery

Turn off your iPhone and then take out the bottom screws with a pentalobe screwdriver. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus screen will need to be heated to soften the glue before it can be removed. Do it long enough to allow the heat to transmit through to the glue, a good way to know is until you can still touch the phone.

Take a suction cup, place it on the screen close to the home button and lift up on the screen just a little bit and then you can take a metal pry tool and start to wedge between the screen and the frame, lifting up on the screen itself.

When you have the screen slightly ajar, put one of the plastic cards into the gap, not too far, just enough so the screen does not re-seat. Gently use the other card and run it down the side of the phone in between the frame and the iPhone 6 screen. The screen is held in place by clips. Take your time and don’t apply too much pressure as the screen will crack and your iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus Battery Replacement may turn into an iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus screen repair. With the screen up the first thing to do is to disconnect the battery.

Use the star screwdriver to remove the battery connector securing plate.

iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus Battery Replacement – BEWARE

Keep the screws organised as they are all different lengths. If you put the wrong length screw into the wrong hole, you can pierce the circuit board, rendering your device useless. When disconnecting the battery, use a plastic spudger to pop the battery connector off, so you do not create a short, blowing some of the components on the board. Last word of warning, when disconnecting any of the connectors, beware of accidentally prying or knocking one of the minute components off of the board.  This mistake will need the services of a micro soldering specialist and set you back at least £50.

Now using the spudger pry the battery connector off. Next remove the screen by removing the screen securing plate’s screws and pop the screen connectors off. It is advisable to remove the screen as it is easy to tear the screen flex cables when prying the battery out of the phone casing.

The battery is glued inside of the phone so warm up the phone a little bit from the back and do it long enough to allow the heat to transmit through to the glue which is holding the battery in place. Don’t let the phone get too hot so you can’t touch it anymore because at that point you may start damaging components so just warm up the phone long enough to melt the glue in the back.

Next using tweezers, peel back the pull tabs which are glued to the top bottom edge of the battery, then pull the tabs out slowly to release the battery.  Next, remove the battery and left over original adhesive tape.

Now grab some double-sided sticky tape and install 3 strips so that the battery doesn’t slide around while you’re using your phone. Remove the double sided tape backing and plug in the battery and then set the battery back into it’s slot.

I plug the battery in first so that it’s lined up with the connection points. Press down on the battery to ensure good adhesion. NB – disconnect the battery now so that you can reconnect the screen flex cables without out shorting them out. Once the cables are reconnected, install the screen connector securing plate with the screws.
