iPhone 12 Known Issues

No service and a missing IMEI after a drop

The iPhone 12 logic board is two boards stacked and soldered together through a spacer called an interposer. Drop the phone hard enough and those interposer joints crack, the two halves part company, and the phone loses cellular entirely. Open Settings, General, About and the IMEI line is gone, leaving only the serial number.

The trap comes next. Restoring the phone through iTunes or Finder at that point repairs nothing, and it comes back stuck on “unable to activate”, which most owners reasonably read as bricked. Putting it right means splitting the board sandwich on a heated platen at around 235 degrees C, inspecting the pads under a microscope, re-balling the joints and reassembling the two layers. Boards with enough ripped pads are beyond economical repair, and no honest shop will pretend otherwise. The 12 and the 12 Pro use the same board with minor changes, and both are harder to split cleanly than the 12 Pro Max.

Genuine replacement parts still trigger warnings and lose features

Apple pairs the camera, display, battery and Face ID hardware to the individual logic board. This isn’t about counterfeit parts. Swapping cameras between two brand-new iPhone 12s produced a camera app that froze at 0.5x zoom, a portrait mode that didn’t work at all, and a panorama mode that refused to fire, using two Apple cameras out of two Apple phones.

iOS 14.4 restored camera function and replaced it with a permanent “Important Camera Message” notice in Settings. The rest didn’t change. Fit any display other than the factory one and True Tone disappears without warning. Fit any battery other than the factory one and the battery health percentage is swapped for the word “Service”, even though the cell charges and discharges normally. Face ID never survives a board swap or a front sensor swap, because only Apple’s own software pairs it.

Touch stops responding while the display still lights up

Two different faults look identical from the outside. If the image is frozen mid-task, it’s the operating system rather than the panel, and a force restart clears it: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button for about ten seconds until the Apple logo appears.

If the display still shows a moving image but ignores every touch, the digitiser has failed. There’s no digitiser to replace on its own; on the iPhone 12 it’s bonded into the OLED assembly under heavy adhesive, so the entire display assembly comes out. That’s one to two hours on the bench, and True Tone goes with it.

Silent during calls but fine on speakerphone

A phone that plays music through the loudspeaker and sounds dead held against the ear has a receiver fault, not a general audio fault. The replacement part is the earpiece speaker and front sensor assembly, and it carries the Face ID sensors, so fitting one outside Apple’s tooling switches Face ID off. Before anyone orders a part, check the cheap causes: cases and screen protectors without a proper earpiece cutout block the receiver outright, and the bottom loudspeaker grille fills with pocket lint that a pin and a short burst of air will shift.

Random shutdowns and a phone that won’t start

Check Settings, Battery, Battery Health before anyone blames the motherboard. The iPhone 12 carries a 2,815 mAh cell; below 80% maximum capacity it has measurably degraded, and below 50% it needs replacing. A phone that runs happily on the charger and dies the second the cable comes out is a battery.

Work through it in order. Charge for ten minutes on a cable and plug socket you’ve already proved work, force restart, then test with an external display or a USB ammeter to see whether the phone is powering on behind a dead screen. Only once all three come back clean is the board worth suspecting.

Wi-Fi that drops when the top of the phone is covered

This one isn’t a fault at all. The iPhone 12’s Wi-Fi antenna sits at the top of the chassis, and covering that area with a palm or a thick case pulls the signal down far enough to notice mid-stream. Owners who move to a slimmer case, or shift their grip down the body, get the connection back. No part will change it, and any shop quoting for one is selling hardware that fixes nothing.
