We would love to be able to fix every device and would love to be able to give you your device back working as it should be. Some devices are just beyond repair or need to be taken to a Micro-Soldering Specialist. Our expertise has taken years to acquire, so we charge £20 for any device which we are not able to repair. This by no means covers our costs, as we sometimes spend in excess of an hour or two working through different options to get your device working again. In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. We have teamed up with a specialist “Micro-Soldering Board Level Repair Company” here in Bristol specifically to ensure we get your device fixed in almost all cases.
We know you are busy, so we offer a service where we come to you. We will arrive in a Red DrFixit Van at your home or work or wherever you want. Our vans are fully fitted with all the necessary tools to get your device working in no time. Did I mention our call out charge starts from only £15 to come to you? I am sure you agree… that level of convenience makes perfect sense. To find out more, please visit our page If We Come To You.
We will not use cheap parts and will certainly not do a botch job either. You can rely on us. If you have any problems after the repair has been completed, just give us a call.
Ninety-five watt hours of lithium-ion at 10.95 volts, and it has been cycling since 2012. Every pack in this chassis is well past its design life by now, so the symptoms are predictable: runtime measured in minutes, a percentage reading that falls off a cliff, or a machine that dies the instant the lead comes out. Replacement A1417 cells are still stocked by UK parts suppliers, which tells you how routinely these get swapped. It is the single most common job on this model.
Apple did not screw this pack down. It is taped and bonded to the top case, and the cells are soft enough to tear or crease if you lever at them from the wrong angle. There is a reason the repair guides for this exact model are titled “without rip or bend” — ripping and bending is the default outcome for anyone going in with a flat screwdriver and optimism. Puncture a cell and a battery job becomes a top-case job, at considerably greater cost.
Audio drops out on one side, or turns crackly and thin while the other channel stays clean. The right-hand speaker is the one that gets named specifically in A1398 repair guides, alongside the battery and the feet, all reached through the same bottom-case teardown. The good news is that it is a replaceable module rather than something soldered to the board. The less good news is that it lives under the bottom case, so there is no quick fix from the outside.
The feet on the bottom case are glued on, not clipped in, and after this many years the adhesive gives up. One drops off, the machine rocks on the desk, and the bare aluminium starts grinding against whatever it is sitting on. Cosmetic, right up until the bottom case is scored through. Replacing them is a separate job from anything electrical, though the bottom case still comes off with pentalobe P5 screws — so no, not the screwdriver in the kitchen drawer.
