No Fix No Fee?

We would love to be able to fix every device and would love to be able to give you your device back working as it should be. Some devices are just beyond repair or need to be taken to a Micro-Soldering Specialist. Our expertise has taken years to acquire, so we charge £20 for any device which we are not able to repair. This by no means covers our costs, as we sometimes spend in excess of an hour or two working through different options to get your device working again. In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. We have teamed up with a specialist “Micro-Soldering Board Level Repair Company” here in Bristol specifically to ensure we get your device fixed in almost all cases.

It charges when it feels like it, then stops

Wiggle the lead and it wakes up. Let go and it’s dead again. Every time someone lifts the iPad by the cable or sets it down on a plugged-in lead, that force goes straight into the charging port’s connection to the board. Pocket lint compacted into the port does the same job, just slower and quieter.

A decent shop starts with the boring stuff, because the boring stuff is usually right — clear the port properly, then retest with a lead and plug socket already proven on another device. If it still won’t hold a connection, the port comes off with hot air and a fresh one goes back on. That’s a board-level job under a microscope, not a parts swap. Thumbs up for any tech who checks the lint first.

Completely dead — no charge, no Apple logo, nothing

Plug it in and absolutely nothing happens. No logo, no charging, no sign the thing has ever held electricity in its life. Where a worn port gives you flickers of hope, this gives you none, and the cause usually sits further in than the connector: a knock or a flex has cracked the thin copper traces running out of the charging circuit across the board, so the power arrives at the port and then goes nowhere.

There’s no part you can buy for that. A tech puts the board under a microscope, traces where the path breaks, and rebuilds the damaged sections with jumper wire to restore it. Worth saying plainly — a shop that only offers “replace the whole board” here either doesn’t do micro-soldering or doesn’t fancy it. This one is genuinely fixable.

It only charges when it’s switched off, and then won’t stay off

This is the weird one. Shut it down and the battery climbs. Switch it on and it drains while it’s still plugged in. Then, purely to be annoying, it wakes itself back up unprompted, so it never gets the uninterrupted off-time it needs to actually fill up.

Two faults are usually tangled together: the iPad is drawing more current than it’s being given, and something in the charging circuit is nudging it back into booting. Diagnosis here is measurement, not guesswork — a bench supply or a USB power meter shows exactly how much current the thing is pulling and how it behaves the moment it’s asked to charge. That reading is what separates a tired battery from a charging IC from the same trace damage as above wearing a different hat. And do a proper force restart before any of it. That one’s free.
