If We Come To You

We know you are busy, so we offer a service where we come to you. We will arrive in a Red DrFixit Van at your home or work or wherever you want. Our vans are fully fitted with all the necessary tools to get your device working in no time. Did I mention our call out charge starts from only £15 to come to you? I am sure you agree… that level of convenience makes perfect sense. To find out more, please visit our page If We Come To You.

No Fix No Fee?

We would love to be able to fix every device and would love to be able to give you your device back working as it should be. Some devices are just beyond repair or need to be taken to a Micro-Soldering Specialist. Our expertise has taken years to acquire, so we charge £20 for any device which we are not able to repair. This by no means covers our costs, as we sometimes spend in excess of an hour or two working through different options to get your device working again. In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. We have teamed up with a specialist “Micro-Soldering Board Level Repair Company” here in Bristol specifically to ensure we get your device fixed in almost all cases.

12 Month Warranty

We will not use cheap parts and will certainly not do a botch job either. You can rely on us. If you have any problems after the repair has been completed, just give us a call.

iPad Pro 11 2018 1st Generation Known Issues

The frame bends at two weak spots

So, this is a very thin aluminium tablet, and it doesn’t take much to fold it. In JerryRigEverything’s bend test on the 11-inch model, the frame gave way by hand and creased in the middle of both long edges. On one side the crease ran right through the lone microphone hole. On the other it went through the plastic strip that lets the Apple Pencil charge through the metal. He also said the thin screen glass and the loose pouch batteries add very little stiffness. That’s one deliberate stress test, not a tally of damaged iPads. Still, it’s a good reason not to leave one where someone might sit on it.

Worn or bridged USB-C port pins

VCC Board Repairs calls a failed charging port a very common fault on these, and the first thing he rules out when one won’t charge. On the A1980 he opened, the pins inside the original USB-C port were squashed and smeared, and a few were touching each other. Bridged pins like that can send charging voltage down the wrong line. His own theory is that charging and using the iPad at the same time keeps the cable moving and grinds the pins down. So he suggests charging it, unplugging it, then using it. In his experience a new port fixes most of these.

Still not charging after a new port

On that same A1980, the port swap didn’t fix it. A USB-C meter showed the iPad pulling around 5 volts and under half an amp, then cutting out and starting again in a loop. It should ask for 15 volts unless the battery is full. A pin tester still found a shorted line with a known-good port fitted, so the fault was on the board. He traced it to the CD3215 USB-C charging chip and the TriStar, replaced both, and it fast-charged again. One board, but a port isn’t always the whole answer.

**Repair note:** the battery connects by pressure contact, so the board is lifted off it rather than unplugged. Lever from the side of the connector, never underneath, or you can damage the pins and cause a new charging fault.
