In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. iPhone 13 Pro Max Known Issues

Face ID stops working after a dot projector failure

When Face ID fails on an iPhone 13 Pro Max, VCC Board Repairs points at the dot projector inside the front camera assembly. His test software reports the sensor as abnormal, and he treats that as the common result. Apple redesigned this module across the iPhone 13 range, so the dot projector and the infrared camera now sit on one flex.

Repair note: the original sensor data is read off first, a chip is replaced with a purpose-made one, and the data is written back. Reaching the sensor means lifting the logic board, cutting through a thicker white glue and breaking a solder joint on the bracket. He describes it as a job for a specialist.

Screen dims itself when the phone runs hot

Max Tech ran graphically heavy games on his 13 Pro Max. Most played without trouble. Genshin Impact did not. After five to ten minutes on maximum settings, the display dropped to just over half brightness, and PUBG showed some dimming too. He ties it to heat: Apple cannot keep the A15 chip cool enough under that load. Low Power Mode slows the chip and cuts the heat, and in his testing it is a workable fix for gaming. He rated the dimming as milder than on the 12 Pro Max, which went darker and sooner.

Camera jumps to the ultra-wide lens up close

Both the 13 Pro and Pro Max switch on their own to the ultra-wide lens for macro shots as you move towards a subject. Max Tech found the switch happens too early. The phone uses a digital crop of the ultra-wide to hide the change, and that crop costs image quality at medium distances. The Tech Chap describes a ghosting effect during the switch. He reports that Apple acknowledged it and later added an Auto Macro toggle in the camera settings. Turn it off and the lens only changes when you choose. Before that, Max Tech’s workaround was covering the ultra-wide with a finger.

Low-light zoom shots come out soft

On both Pro models, Max Tech found the camera sometimes picks the 3x telephoto lens in very dark scenes when it should not. The telephoto has an f/2.8 aperture. That is slower than the telephoto on earlier Pro models, and far slower than the main lens. Less light means a longer exposure, so camera shake and moving subjects blur. His example is swaying trees in night mode. His workaround is simple: zoom to 2.9x instead of 3x. That forces the phone onto the main lens, which gave him the cleaner shot.
