Opening The Device
iPhones open by removing the screws at the bottom of the phone next to the charging port, then a thin pry tool will be needed to pry the device open. The newer iPhone screens are glued in to place, so you will need to heat the screen before you can attempt to open it. Samsung & Huawei Smart Phones are also glued together. The back battery cover is glued in place, so you also need to heat the glue before you attempt to pry the back battery cover off. Beware there are components under the battery cover such as the wifi antenna. You could always use a hair dryer or a heat gun. What could go wrong?
- You could easily crack the iPhone screen, or the back cover of your Samsung or Huawei Smart Phone
- You could burn the phone with a heat gun
- You could lose those tiny screws
- You could damage the wifi antenna or some other components
Remember you may need special glue to put the device back together again and this will also need to be heated so that the glue settles and binds properly.

Smart phone components are tiny. Most are not even visible to the naked eye and some are located right next to the battery connector. Also note that iPhones batteries sit in the back iPhone casing. To do a Samsung or Huawei battery replacement, you will need to ensure you do not damage the device screen because the battery and the circuit board for these devices is built in to the screen of the phone. You will need to heat the device to soften the glue, so you can pry the battery out of the device, so what could go wrong?
- You could knock a component off the circuit board
- You could short out a component, causing all sorts of additional damage to the inside fo the device
- Bear in mind Mobile Phones use a lithium battery, which if pierced, will catch fire
- You could damage the battery connector
- You could forget to disconnect the battery, which means when you work on your device, you could blow / short out some of the components on the circuit board
- You could damage the screen
Some Additional Battery Replacement Tips
- When opening your phone or disconnecting the battery always use plastic tools to avoid shorting out components.
- Using cheap chargers may damage your battery and / or the charging circuit.
- Continuing to charge the battery once it is fully charged may cause the battery to swell and that will cause the screen to bulge
- A good Mobile Phone Repairer like DrFixit, will be able to test the battery on your iPhone, Samsung or Huawei Smart Phone, iPad of Tablet before replacing it
Bear in mind that when taking your iPhone or Samsung Smart Phone to a professional, specialised tools are used to ensure that the repair is done without causing additional damage, for example a microscope is used to see the components. Specialised soldering station costing hundreds of pounds is needed to replace damaged components.
