Most people have been in that place where their iPhone either breaks, gets damaged beyond repair, gets lost or stolen. These days many literally live their lives through their mobile device, so would it not be a good idea to ensure all the precious data is kept safe?
2 Ways to keep your data safe & 1 Get out of Jail Free Card
The 2 ways to keep your data safe are firstly the obvious backing-up of your data as explained below, but what if you phone gets stolen of lost? Use Find My iPhone, but first you have to set it up.
Setting up Find My iPhone
Everyone who has an iPhone should have an iCloud account, which can be used to track your iPhone should you lose your phone, your phone gets stolen whilst out in Bristol or your iPhone screen gets damaged for example, but first you need to “enable” it on your device, iPhone or iPad. Make sure you do this on all of your Apple devices.
- Firstly go to setting on your device
- Next at the very top of the screen select your user name
- Now select iCloud
- Scroll down and ensure Find my iPhone is switched on
NB – You could track your lost / stolen iPad from your iPhone whilst on the move & visa versa if you have an internet connection. I used this technique to find my wife’s iPhone which she left in a Spanish restaurant in Malaga, after the bar staff decided to keep her phone.
Backing-up Your iPhone
Backing up your iPhone is more important than backing up your computer as it gets put in more situations on a day to day basis where all of your information could be lost. Backing up your iPhone will keep your data, contacts, photos, and app information safe and allows you to transfer all of this info to a new device, quickly and easily, so how do you back up your iPhone to make sure that this doesn’t happen to you?
- Firstly you will need to have iTunes on your computer, if not, download and install it, it is Free
- Now open iTunes
- Next connect your iPhone to your computer, you can do that either by Wifi or by using the iPhone cable
- Wait for your iPhone to be found by iTunes. If this is the first time, you are connecting to iTunes, you will need to go through iTunes synch set-up
- Once the set-up is finished, click the image of a phone on the top left in iTunes
- Select your different back-up options
- Click Sync
Once you have set this up, you can select if you want iTunes to automatically open and back-up every time you connect your iPhone to the computer
I almost forgot “The Get Out of Jail Free Card” whats that all about?
If you damage your device so that it will not even switch on, do not panic! Your personal data is stored in a solid state flash memory chip inside the iPhone. It is possible in most cases for a phone shop in Bristol that does data recovery company to repair the phone enough so that they can recover all of your data, but it will not be cheap…
The moral of the story, get organised or get ready to reach into your pocket or even worse lose all of your precious private data.
