No Fix No Fee?

We would love to be able to fix every device and would love to be able to give you your device back working as it should be. Some devices are just beyond repair or need to be taken to a Micro-Soldering Specialist. Our expertise has taken years to acquire, so we charge £20 for any device which we are not able to repair. This by no means covers our costs, as we sometimes spend in excess of an hour or two working through different options to get your device working again. In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. We have teamed up with a specialist “Micro-Soldering Board Level Repair Company” here in Bristol specifically to ensure we get your device fixed in almost all cases.

iPad Pro 10.5 2017 Known Issues

Restarting every few minutes after a drop

This is the fault with the most evidence behind it. The iPad switches on, runs for a few seconds or a few minutes, then restarts. In bad cases it never gets past the Apple logo before going round again. One board repair shop calls this a very common problem on the 10.5″ Pro and traces it to the small coils on the logic board. It isn’t the solder that gives up. The coil body itself snaps, and its legs stay stuck to the pads. So, a software restore won’t fix it. In one case the owner tried an update first and the restarting got worse.

Why a new screen doesn’t cure it

These restarts usually follow a drop, and a drop usually cracks the glass. But, swapping the screen doesn’t stop the reboots, because the damage is on the board. In one repair, the shop replaced a broken coil, put the iPad back together and it still restarted. A second, slower look found three more coils missing from the same board. A coil that snaps off can fall out unnoticed while the screen is being changed. Once every missing coil was replaced from a donor board, the iPad booted straight through to the home screen.

Completely dead, with coils coming loose

A different board repairer had a 10.5″ Pro passed on from another repair shop. It had been booked in as having no display, but it was drawing zero current: properly dead, not just a dark screen. Under the microscope, coils were coming away from the board. Replacing every loose coil brought it back. No drop is mentioned in this case. After looking into it, the repairer says this is apparently common on this iPad and looks to him like a manufacturing fault. That is his view, not a confirmed cause.

A white spot on the display

A long-term owner describes a bright patch on the screen that only shows up properly on a white background. On darker or more colourful content it’s hard to spot. He bought his with the fault already present and calls it extremely widespread on this iPad Pro and on the 2019 iPad Air (third generation), saying it affects only those two models. His theory is that heat from the processor, which sits tight behind the display in such a thin body, damages the backlight. He admits he isn’t sure. Treat the cause as unconfirmed.
