If We Come To You

We know you are busy, so we offer a service where we come to you. We will arrive in a Red DrFixit Van at your home or work or wherever you want. Our vans are fully fitted with all the necessary tools to get your device working in no time. Did I mention our call out charge starts from only £15 to come to you? I am sure you agree… that level of convenience makes perfect sense. To find out more, please visit our page If We Come To You.

No Fix No Fee?

We would love to be able to fix every device and would love to be able to give you your device back working as it should be. Some devices are just beyond repair or need to be taken to a Micro-Soldering Specialist. Our expertise has taken years to acquire, so we charge £20 for any device which we are not able to repair. This by no means covers our costs, as we sometimes spend in excess of an hour or two working through different options to get your device working again. In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. We have teamed up with a specialist “Micro-Soldering Board Level Repair Company” here in Bristol specifically to ensure we get your device fixed in almost all cases.

12 Month Warranty

We will not use cheap parts and will certainly not do a botch job either. You can rely on us. If you have any problems after the repair has been completed, just give us a call.

iPhone 6 Plus Known Issues

Touch disease: grey flickering bar and dead touch

This is the big one. The early sign is a flashing grey band across the very top of the display, plus touch that works one minute and ignores you the next. The picture stays fine. Only touch fails. iPad Rehab shows a phone where twisting the board one way brings the fault on and twisting it back clears it, which they call stage one. Left alone, it tends to get worse with age and daily use until touch stops working altogether. iPad Rehab says more than half of its mail-in repairs were 6 Plus touch failures.

What causes it

Both board-repair videos put it down to flex. iPad Rehab describes the 6 Plus as thin, flat and wide, so the logic board bends during normal use. The two touch controller chips sit on tiny solder balls, and that repeated bending cracks the joints until they separate. A second video says the touch chips had no underfill, the glue-like epoxy that holds most other chips in place, so drops and bends load the joints directly. iPad Rehab adds that the touch chips sit under a floppy cloth sticker shield, midway between two screw points. Drops and bent frames are both common triggers.

Repair note: what the repairers do

iPad Rehab says reflowing the old joints doesn’t hold, because the cracked surfaces oxidise and flux can’t reach far enough under the chip. Their approach is replacing both touch chips, not one. They’re honest that this only restores the original design, so the fault can come back. They also try a stiffer custom shield to stop the twisting, but the brief doesn’t include how that turned out.

Bending

Zack from JerryRigEverything bent a 6 Plus by hand and got a slight curve in the body straight away, though it took more force than he expected. Pushed further, the screen cracked. The weak spots were along the edge by the buttons and SIM tray, with a crease running from the bottom of the volume button across to the SIM slot. A board-repair video links bending directly to touch disease, and notes the 6s range moved to a different aluminium.
