No Fix No Fee?

Some devices are just beyond repair or need to be taken to a Micro-Soldering Specialist. Our expertise has taken years to acquire, so we charge £20 for any device which we are not able to repair. This by no means covers our costs, as we sometimes spend in excess of an hour or two working through different options to get your device working again. In the event that you have called us out to your location, we will only charge you the call out fee plus £10. If we are unable to repair your device, we may still be able to help get your device fixed and may even be able to get your data recovered. We have teamed up with a specialist “Micro-Soldering Board Level Repair Company” here in Bristol specifically to ensure we get your device fixed in almost all cases.

Samsung S21 5G Known Issues

The phone restarts the second a charger goes in

Here we have a Galaxy S21 5G that came in for repair, and it reboots the moment current actually moves through the USB-C port. Plug a bare lead in and nothing happens. Plug the far end into a charger, or plug a mouse in, and it runs for a second or two and restarts — powered off as well as on. On this phone the port sits on its own daughterboard, joined to the mainboard by a ribbon, so the daughterboard, that ribbon and both of its connectors are what we test and replace first.

Before anyone orders a part, there is a free check worth doing. In Apps, switch on View System Apps, find the USB entry and clear its cache, then plug in and watch how long it survives. If a correct new daughterboard and a known-good battery both change nothing, I have to be 100% upfront with the customer at that point: the fault is on the mainboard, not on the port.

A charge port board that was already the wrong one

The S21 was built with two different chipsets depending on the region it was sold into, and the USB-C daughterboards are not interchangeable between them. A UK phone is the Exynos build — SM-G991B — so an Exynos-spec board is the only one that belongs in it. We see second-hand handsets where a previous owner or a previous shop has fitted the Snapdragon part, or a poor copy, and the symptom never moves no matter how many boards go in.

That is also why a “good condition” phone can still be a board fault. The owner says it was never dropped, or it was cased and the glass is perfect. A case protects glass. It does not stop the board flexing on a hard impact, and fractured solder joints under the SoC are not something we can see, on this device or any other, because those contacts sit underneath the chip.

Random shutdowns and power that will not hold steady

A phone that dies at 40%, restarts on its own, or only behaves while it is on charge is a battery until proven otherwise. The S21 cell is glued in behind the back glass, so this is a heat-and-lift job rather than a clip-out, but it is a straightforward one and it is far and away the most common cause of unstable power on a well-treated handset.

One warning that matters more than the repair itself: do not flash firmware onto a phone with unstable power. If it loses power partway through a write, a straightforward battery job turns into a mainboard replacement — a far bigger job, and a far bigger bill. Battery first, software second, in that order.

Stuck on the logo after an update or a factory reset

This one turns up after a system update or after a reset before selling the phone on. It powers up, shows the Samsung logo, and goes no further. Recovery mode has a quirk on the S21 5G that catches people out — on many units it will not enter recovery on the button combination alone, and needs to be plugged into a PC before the combination takes.

From there it is an Odin flash of the correct stock firmware for that exact model code, which can be done without wiping the phone if the right load is used. We always attempt data extraction before anything is written to the device, because a failed flash removes the option permanently. And if Odin itself will not complete, the phone has a hardware fault underneath the software symptom.

Signal that drops in and out on its own

Calls drop, the bars empty for a minute, then everything comes back with nothing touched. On the S21 this shows up widely enough after an Android update that network settings are the first thing to reset, before anyone opens the phone. If it survives a network settings reset and a known-good SIM in a different handset, then we are looking at the antenna path — the coax connectors and antenna flexes that run down to the lower board, which are also the ones most likely to be left half-seated by a previous repair.

Mobile data dead while calls and texts still work

Different symptom, different fault. Full bars, calls fine, texts fine, but nothing loads off Wi-Fi. That split points at the data side rather than the radio: APN configuration, the network mode the phone has selected, or a carrier profile that did not survive an update or a SIM swap. It is worth being honest about this one — most of these are a settings fix and not a repair at all, and we will tell you that rather than quote you for a part.
